Whenever anybody comes to your door, firstly, think about whether you are expecting anybody? Look through the window to see who it is and consider having a spy hole fitted, if you don’t already have one. Lock all your other outer doors in case the person at the front door is a means of distraction for an accomplice who intends to come in through the back door. Always use a door chain. If you do not know the person, ask for some photographic identification and make sure you examine it carefully. If you are unsure, ask the caller to come back when there will be somebody else with you. Consider putting up a ‘no cold callers’ sign up on your door or in our window. You can download a free sign from Action Fraud. Contact your local Neighbourhood Watch scheme to see if they can provide a neighbour to keep an eye on any callers. You can check their website to find your local scheme. Consider being placed on your utility companies’ Priority Services Register, where you can set up a password so you know if anybody claiming to be from these organisations is genuine and not a bogus caller. If the caller won’t leave, or you are suspicious, dial 999 or the non-emergency number 101 to report an incident if you’re not in danger.
