Q&A with Lesley Papworth

A fresh start for Wheelchair Services at Millbrook Healthcare

Lesley, you’ve recently joined Millbrook Healthcare to lead the reactivation of the wheelchair service. What drew you to this opportunity?

As an Occupational Therapist with 20 years of experience in wheelchair services, I’ve seen how essential the right wheelchair is to a person’s health, participation in daily activities and overall quality of life. I’ve worked in various roles across both NHS and private sectors, clinically most often with complex posture management, and operationally I have managed clinical teams as well as an integrated Wheelchair Service, so I understand the challenges and the opportunities in this space. I have previously worked at Millbrook and when I was contacted about joining the team to work on the re-launch of their wheelchair offering, I knew it was something I wanted to be part of. I’m delighted to be back, and excited to bring together clinical best practice, operational excellence, and a real focus on the individual to create a service that empowers people.

Millbrook has a strong track record in community equipment services. What sets your wheelchair service apart in today’s healthcare landscape?

What sets us apart is our approach of doing the right thing at the right time, using all means within our bounds to provide wheelchairs that support people’s daily lives, goals, and wellbeing. That means investing in clinical expertise, ensuring specialised assessments, effective wheelchair solutions backed up by quality repairs and maintenance, and working closely with service users, carers, and professionals every step of the way.

What are some of the key benefits people can expect from the re-launched wheelchair service?

We’re introducing better communication tools and making the process smoother for referrers and professionals, which ultimately benefits the end user. Whether it’s for children or adults, with or without complex needs, our aim is to provide the right chair, at the right time, with the right support.

Collaboration is often key to healthcare success. How will the wheelchair service work alongside NHS partners and local authorities?

Partnership at all levels, including service users, is central to everything we do. We’re already working closely with NHS commissioners, clinicians, and local authorities to ensure that our service integrates seamlessly with existing pathways. That means shared goals, open dialogue, and a focus on clinical outcomes.

What’s your vision for the future of wheelchair services at Millbrook?

My vision is a responsive and effective service that evolves with people’s needs, incorporating high quality and efficiency. That includes embracing digital tools, harnessing user feedback, and continuously improving our offer. I want Millbrook’s wheelchair services to be known not just for quality and reliability, but for providing dignity and choice. It’s about unlocking potential and taking wheelchair services in a different direction; that’s a future I’m proud to help shape.
